GB Taekwondo today announced a deal with the BBC to broadcast next month’s World Taekwondo Grand Prix live on the interactive Red Button service. It will be the first time since the 2012 Olympics that an international Taekwondo event held in the UK is screened live, promising fans of the sport multiple match viewing options across the event weekend, 13-15 December.
The World Taekwondo Grand Prix is part of UK Sport’s Gold Event Series which aims to bring over 70 world class sporting events to Great Britain to help build a strong legacy from London 2012. The Grand Prix will see 250 of the world’s top athletes across eight different weight categories battle it out for vital qualification points ahead of Rio 2016.
All 16 of the 2013 World Championship gold medallists and all eight gold medallists from the 2012 Olympics are expected to attend the world-first event, with impressive matches expected across three days of intense competition.
GB Taekwondo director, Steve Flynn, says the Grand Prix will host one of the strongest fields ever assembled in the sport; “With just four weeks to go until the competition kicks off, the world’s best athletes are entering the final phase of intensive training and preparation in readiness for Manchester. We’re very excited about the new Grand Prix series and it’s a real boost to see the significance of the event recognised by the BBC. It’s fantastic exposure for Taekwondo, a sport that had such a huge impact at London 2012.”
Olympic medallists Jade Jones and Lutalo Muhammad, together with Michael Harvey, Bianca Walkden and Martin Stamper, will represent Great Britain in the competition, with eight further wildcards to be announced in the coming weeks.
Red Button is the BBC’s interactive broadcast service, available in homes across the UK via digital, satellite, cable and broadband connections. The World Taekwondo Grand Prix will also stream live on the BBC Sport website, catering for both UK and international audiences.
On radio, BBC 5Live will announce Grand Prix updates throughout the weekend. To experience the thrill of the action live in Manchester, view the full Grand Prix schedule and ticket information at www.taekwondogp.com.
